At ICCL, we envision a country where everyone is taken care of.
Where we are all safe, even behind closed doors.
But we don’t always know what’s going on behind closed doors. In prisons, in nursing homes, in Direct Provision centres, in garda holding cells or in psychiatric institutions.
For example, what happens if someone is arrested and taken to a garda station? There is no independent inspection of garda holding cells. And no independent complaints mechanism.
This has to change.
For years, the government has said it will implement an overarching mechanism to help prevent torture and ill-treatment in Ireland. That body should have powers to inspect all places where people are held in the care of the State – including prisons, Direct Provision centres, nursing homes, psychiatric institutions and garda holding cells.
