Joint ICCL and Intersex Ireland submission to the CSO on the Census 2027 Public Consultation

January 2023

It is important to ensure that people are captured in population statistics in all their diversity, including LGBTI+ people. The 2027 Census is an unprecedented opportunity to make progress in this regard.

In this joint submission with Intersex Ireland, we are calling for the inclusion of a separate specific question on variations of sex characteristics that would quantify the intersex population in Ireland, as well as providing access to an unprecedented picture of lived experience aspects if combined with questions on relationship status, nationality, employment and other key aspects of someone’s life.

We are also adding our voice to call for the addition of questions on sexual orientation and gender identity.
