Media release 21 June 2010
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has welcomed the Government’s decision to drop its challenge to a High Court declaration that Irish law on transgender rights is in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Speaking today, ICCL Director Mr. Mark Kelly said:
“It was unconscionable that the Government saw it fit in 2007 to launch an appeal to the Supreme Court in this case, and in so doing further delay the granting of rights to which Dr Foy was fully entitled under the European Convention on Human Rights.”
“That the Government has now dropped its appeal is to be welcomed. It now falls on the legislature to enact legislation recognising the new gender of transgendered persons, and enabling them to obtain new birth certificates”.
