ICCL event on strengthening procedural rights in police custody: audio and visual recordings.

As part of our EU- funded project – From law to practice: Strengthening procedural rights in police custody – on 19th and 20th July 2022 ICCL hosted a regional consultation. Police, government officials, defence lawyers, forensic psychiatrists, experts in technology and privacy and academics on policing and criminal justice came together to discuss audio-visual recording of police interviews.

Audio-visual recordings are an important safeguard for suspects being interviewed, but also protect the police against false accusations of mistreatment or coercion.

We were reminded however that this procedural safeguard alone is not enough, it must be incorporated into a broader package of procedural rights including the right to access a lawyer and have a lawyer present during the interview.
