ICCL Statement on the Death of Dr Ann Louise Gilligan

ICCL Statement on the Death of Dr. Ann Louise Gilligan

Dublin June 15th 2017

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has today expressed its deep sorrow at the passing of Ann Louise Gilligan, educationalist and campaigner for equality and social justice.

Speaking today, ICCL Executive Director Liam Herrick said:

“We learned today with great sorrow about the passing of Ann Louise Gilligan. Over a long and accomplished career as an educationalist Ann Louise inspired countless children, young people and families – in all parts of Ireland, but most especially in Tallaght. As an academic, she was concerned with the power of education to change lives, to enrich communities and as a foundation for a better society – she radically changed our understanding of the relationship between educational theory and practice, and our understanding of the relationship between education and social justice.”

Ann Louise’s life was a celebration of integrity and ethics.  For her there was no separation between the excellence of her intellectual work, the passion which she brought to her political activism, and the values by which she lived her own life. All aspects of her remarkable life were grounded in creativity, compassion and love for others. She was in the truest sense a role model for all who seek to work for justice and equality.”

Reflecting on the importance of the case taken by Katherine Zappone and Ann Louise in the struggle for marriage equality, Mr Herrick said

“Ann Louise’s personal courage, and that of her wife Katherine, in putting their own life story and their private relationship before the courts and the political system in order to achieve equality for others was an act of the most profound generosity. Ireland owes an immense debt to Ann Louise Gilligan and Katherine Zappone for the more equal society we now enjoy.

The Board and staff of ICCL wish to extend our very deepest sympathies to Katherine at this most difficult time.
