Taking Human Rights Seriously As A Lawyer

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) was delighted to have Lord Anthony Lester. QC as guest speaker at our our 3rd Annual Dinner and Lecture for legal practitioners, which took place on 24 November 2010 .
Lord Lester of Herne Hill also kindly presented a signed copy of “Human Rights Law and Practice” (third edition) to the ICCL.
Anthony Lester QC is a Liberal Democrat life peer and President of the Human Rights Lawyers Association. He was a founder of Interights (the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights) and was architect of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and Race Relations Act 1976 as special adviser to Home Secretary Roy Jenkins. He has argued many leading cases on human rights in British, European and Commonwealth courts. He campaigned for 30 years for the Human Rights Act and introduced other legislation leading to the Civil Partnership Act, the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act and the Equality Acts. His current initiative is a ground-breaking Defamation Bill. Anthony Lester QC is Adjunct Professor of Public Law at University College Cork and is Joint Editor of Butterworths Human Rights Law and Practice (Third Ed. 2009). He is also a Junior Member of the Bar Council of Ireland.
